New Years in Paris: A Local’s Guide

new years eve in paris (1)

The first time I spent New Year’s Eve in Paris, I had no idea what to expect.

I remember walking through the city, unsure where people went to celebrate, wondering if I should book a fancy dinner or just watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle at midnight from Champs-Élysées (spoiler: don’t do it).

Now that I live here, I’ve learned exactly how the city celebrates: quietly, beautifully, and always with a touch of champagne.

From grand palace celebrations to intimate dinners, this guide will help you to start the year in the most beautiful city of the world in the right way.

What to Expect

Paris during New Year’s week is alive with festive energy – restaurants glitter with lights, shop windows are still dressed for Christmas, and locals fill the streets for last-minute shopping or elegant dinners.

You might also enjoy my guide to Paris in Christmas.

Expect chilly weather (around 3–8°C / 37–46°F), the occasional rain, and that cozy hush that settles over the city once the holidays wind down. The mood is celebratory yet refined – more about long dinners, champagne, and beautiful company than street parties.

New Year’s Eve (called Saint-Sylvestre in France) is one of the most anticipated nights of the year. Parisians tend to celebrate with an elaborate meal — often at home or in restaurants that serve special multi-course menus — followed by champagne at midnight.

On January 1st, most shops close, but cafés, museums, and parks remain open, perfect for a slow and romantic start to the year.

Where to Stay in Paris for New Year’s

The best places to stay during New Year’s in Paris are those that balance beauty, comfort, and location – ideally somewhere near the lights but quiet enough that you actually get soome sleep.

For the ultimate celebration, palace hotels like Cheval Blanc, The Ritz Paris, Le Meurice, Hôtel de Crillon, Shangri-la, La Reserve and Plaza Athénée transform into dreamlike settings with gala dinners, live music, and champagne toasts at midnight. These come with a heavy price-tag but are my ultimate recommendation if you are looking to splurge for a fabulous time.

If you want a more intimate but still luxurious stay, Hotel Balzac, Hôtel de l’Abbaye, or Relais Christine are gorgeous boutique options.

For something stylish yet central, Regina Louvre, Hôtel des Grands Boulevards, or Maison Albar – Le Pont-Neuf have elegant interiors, festive ambiance, and easy access to the celebrations.

Tip: Book early — hotels and restaurants fill up weeks in advance for December 31. If you’re planning to dine or attend a gala, reserve your table as soon as bookings open (usually early November).

About the Street Celebrations

If you want to be part of the outdoor countdown, head to the Champs-Élysées, where crowds gather for a light show projected onto the Arc de Triomphe followed by fireworks at midnight.

It’s festive and free — but also very crowded, so arrive early and keep your valuables secure. I personally don’t recommend this experience.

New Year’s Day in Paris

After the midnight celebrations fade and the city quiets, January 1st in Paris feels peaceful/

It’s the perfect day to slow down, enjoy a long brunch, and take in the city at its calmest.

Most shops close, but cafés, museums, and parks stay open, giving you plenty of beautiful ways to start the year.

Begin your morning with brunch or a late breakfast at one of my favorites: Carette for pastries and hot chocolate on Place des Vosges, Café de la Paix for elegance and history, or Ladurée for something sweet and classic.

After brunch, take a long winter walk – January 1st is one of the quietest days of the year in Paris, and it feels almost cinematic to see the streets half-empty, the Eiffel Tower sparkling against the winter sky.

End your day with tea at Mariage Frères or Angelina, or a quiet dinner at Le Voltaire or Chez Julien – somewhere warm, candlelit, and comforting.

Things to Do in Paris All Year Round

1. See the Icons

Start with the landmarks that define the Paris skyline. Climb the Eiffel Tower (for lunch or dinner at Le Jules Verne or Madame Brasserie, both incredible experiences), admire the view from the top of the Arc de Triomphe, and wander across Pont Alexandre III as the city glows at sunset.

Visit Notre-Dame or spend a morning exploring the Louvre — or, for something quieter, the Musée Rodin, surrounded by sculpture gardens and calm.

2. Take a Cruise on the Seine

3. Visit Parisian Palaces and Day Trips

Immerse yourself in the grandeur of Versailles, just a short trip from the city – its Hall of Mirrors and gardens are breathtaking in any season.

4. Learn to Make Your Own Croissants

There’s no better souvenir than learning how to bake the perfect French croissant.

Join a croissant-making class with a Parisian chef, roll your own dough, and taste your creation fresh from the oven.

5. Spend an Afternoon at a Parisian Café

Cafés are the heart of Parisian life – and the best place to feel like a local.

Sit outside, order a café crème, and let the city pass by. Some of my favorites: Carette (for pastries and people-watching), Café de Flore (for old-school charm), Angelina (for its legendary hot chocolate), and Ralph’s (for an elegant terrace in Saint-Germain).

6. Discover the Neighborhoods

Each arrondissement has its own rhythm.

  • Le Marais – chic boutiques, art galleries, and falafel on Rue des Rosiers.
  • Saint-Germain-des-Prés – literary cafés, antique shops, and timeless Parisian style.
  • Montmartre – cobblestone streets, artist studios, and panoramic views from Sacré-Cœur.
  • Canal Saint-Martin – laid-back, young, and full of local life.
  • Passy & the 16th – elegant, quiet, and filled with Haussmann architecture.

7. Shop Like a Parisian

Shopping in Paris is an experience in itself.

Explore Galeries Lafayette and Le Bon Marché for designer fashion, wander Rue Saint-Honoré for the best of luxury, and stop by Galerie Dior on Avenue Montaigne.

For unique finds, browse vintage shops in Le Marais or visit artisan perfume houses like Officine Universelle Buly or Maison Francis.

Conclusion

Every season in Paris has its own rhythm, but New Years will always be one of my favorite.

I hope this guide helps you experience that same wonder, and if you ever need help planning your perfect trip, I’d love to make it unforgettable for you.

With love, from Paris —
